Wootz is steel made in a crucible after the ancient Indian method. I have been filling a crucible about two-thirds full with the small bits of steel from the tatara, adding charcoal to the top, and covering with a refractory top. Heating the crucibles three to four hours in a gas fired furnace results in the “cakes” of Wootz.
